Seeing as in my home studio i mainly photograph children and families, i thought id do a quick blog about what makes a great family photo session?
What to wear and what to bring to your photo shoot?...
Its always a great idea to look through my galleries of other photo sessions to get inspiration and ideas, but the most important thing is to be you and to bring and wear clothes yourself and your family/children will feel comfortable and relaxed in. I would stay away from formal clothes such as shirts, ties, suit jackets, blazers etc, anything that restricts movement. It is best to keep it casual as your more likely to be more relaxed and this will show in your pictures :)
Colour is great on fun photo shoots as colour expresses fun! any kind of patterns, funny slogans etc look great and make a statement. When in a group , matching does not matter whatsoever, so all be free to wear what you like :)
Always bring with you a few changes for the children and yourself so we can try different styles and looks and gives your shoot more variety in the pictures :)
Everyone who has ever had a shoot with me will tell you i love accessories especially hats! any kind of hats , headbands, hoods! They all look great and just adds something a little different to closeup shots, they can look really cool :) see below some cool hats, hoods and hairband shots :)
Also whats great to bring along to your family/children photo shoot is props, by props i mean anything! Anything you, your children or your family love!, This could be their favourite food, toys, instrument, game anything at all! use your imagination! infact a lot of the time children may have better ideas than their parents, so ask the children what their favourite things are :)
I have a plain white backdrop, a blank canvas waiting to tell your own personal story :) i dont have any props for clients as i want to tell each clients individual story, if i had props then everyones pictures would look the same and there is nothing storytelling about that! :)
Below are a few examples of really fun items some of my clients have brought to their photo shoot :)
The most important thing that makes a great photo shoot is fantastic expressions!! we get this by just having fun! sometimes all you need is amazing shots of a family or children just having a great time together - no props needed :) below is an example of a recent photo shoot i did of such a gorgeous little family, it was a great family session :) and they kept it really simple, but the results are gorgeous! and really capture all the girls fun personalities :) xxx
